• Once-Yearly Zoledronic Acid Approved for Prevention of Fractures After Hip Fracture: Once-yearly zoledronic acid (Reclast) ? an intravenous bisphosphonate used to treat osteoporosis ? is now approved to prevent new fractures in patients who've had a hip fracture, the manufacturer has announced. The drug's label was expanded based on a randomized study in which older adults given zoledronic acid after hip-fracture repair were significantly less likely to experience new vertebral or nonvertebral fractures, compared with those given a placebo infusion. Side effects included fever and muscle pain, usually within 3 days of the infusion.
